Roger Shattuck Age: 82
writer, editor, and scholar whose works ranged from Marcel Proust and a study on the development of human intelligence. He won a National Book Award for his 1974 biography of Proust. His books include Forbidden Knowledge: From Prometheus to Pornography and The Banquet Years: The Origins of the Avant-Garde in France, 1885 to World War I. Died: Lincoln, Vt., Dec. 8, 2005
