Harriet Miers,

White House counsel, was nominated as a U.S. Supreme Court Justice by President Bush in October. She withdrew her nomination in late October, after enduring withering criticism by the right and left for her lack of credentials. In addition, many conservatives questioned her ideology. Miers, who has never been a judge, was once Bush's personal attorney and was the first woman to be president of the State Bar of Texas.
