Jose Canseco, professional baseball player, put major league baseball in the spotlight with the February publication of Juiced. In the controversial tell-all memoir he unapologetically detailed his use of anabolic steroids and human growth hormones. He also alleged other players, including Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa, abused these illegal drugs. In the best-selling book, Canseco, often called “the bad boy of baseball,” claimed the league did nothing to discourage the use of steroids, and he attributed his success at the plate to the drugs. The book prompted congressional hearings into steroid use in professional baseball.
