Edward Heath Age: 89
leader of Britain's Conservative Party who, as prime minister, guided the country's 1973 entry into Europe's Economic Community, now called the European Union. He confronted a sluggish economy further eroded by the oil crisis and intensifying violence in Northern Ireland. He lost his post as party leader in 1975 to Margaret Thatcher. Died: Salisbury, England, July 17, 2005
