influential attorney and mediator who served as White House counsel to presidents Carter and Clinton. He also was a member of President Bush's commission that investigated pre–Sept. 11 intelligence lapses. His firm's clients included I.B.M., American Express, and major television networks, airlines, and pro sports teams.
