Ibrahim Jaafari, Iraqi politician, was named prime minister by Iraq's National Assemby in April, two months after the 275-seat Assembly was elected. In the 1970s Jaafari, a religious Shiite, took part in a movement against Saddam Hussein's government that was brutally suppressed. He went into exile in Iran and then the United Kingdom for 20 years. Jaafari served as vice president of Iraq under Iyad Allawi, the U.S.-appointed prime minister.
