Bobby Fischer,

legendary chess champion, became an Icelandic citizen in March, when Parliament voted to grant him citizenship as a reward for his 1972 victory in a match with Soviet champ Boris Spassky in Reykjavik. Fischer had been detained in Japan since July 2004, when he was held by authorities for trying to leave the country with an invalid American passport. In 1992 Fischer was indicted by the United States for facing off with Spassky in Yugoslavia—a violation of the United States's economic boycott on Yugoslavia.
