Ernst Mayr

top evolutionary biologist who developed the synthetic theory of evolution, which combined Darwin's theory of evolution with genetics. The theory, now widely accepted as true, states that when members of a species are separated—usually by geography—they slowly change genetically and can no longer interbreed.
