Zhao Ziyang

Age: 85

Chinese politician who became a member of the Communist Party Central Committee in 1973 and prime minister in 1980. He championed economic reforms and liberalization of China's foreign policy. He was elevated to general secretary of the party in 1987 but was removed from office in 1989, when he supported the students protesting in Tiananmen Square.

Died: Beijing, Jan. 17, 2005
