Paul Hamm,

gymnast, found himself at the center of a controversy when Olympic judges erroneously awarded the gold medal in the all-around competition to him, when it should have gone to South Korean gymnast Yang Tae Young. Officials allowed Hamm to keep the medal. It was a bittersweet end to a stunning performance by Hamm, who stumbled early on in the competition, only to excel in later events to launch an astonishing comeback.
