Michael Phelps,

swimmer, entered the 2004 Summer Olympics poised to tie or break Mark Spitz's record seven gold medals. While he didn't accomplish the Olympian feat, he did bring home eight medals, tying with Russian gymnast Aleksandr Dityatin as the winningest athlete at a single Olympic Games.
