Julia Child Age: 91
Emmy Award–winning chef and television personality whose breezy style demystified French cooking for a generation of Americans reared on tuna casserole rather than boeuf bourguignon. In 1961, Child, Simone Beck, and Louisette Bertholle wrote Mastering the Art of French Cooking. Her PBS show, The French Chef, followed in 1963. Died: Santa Barbara, Calif., Aug. 13, 2004
