publisher who headed Farrar, Straus, & Giroux, one of the most respected publishing houses in the industry. The company remained the last of the independents until 1994, when Straus sold it to a German media company. The company published the works of Isaac Bashevis Singer, Flannery O'Connor, and Susan Sontag.
