Richard Grasso, chairman and chief executive of the New York Stock Exchange, was the defendant in a civil suit filed by New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer. In the suit, Spitzer demanded that Grasso return more than $100 million of his compensation package, which totalled about $140 million. Grasso resigned in Sept. 2003 amid outrage over his excessive salary.
