David Reimer

subject of a medical experiment who was born a boy but raised as a girl. After a botched circumcision, Reimer was castrated, given female hormones, and renamed Brenda. His doctors inaccurately claimed the case proved that gender differences are a result of nurture rather than nature. He learned of the experiment, called the John/Joan case, at age 14 and decided to live as a male. Reimer committed suicide.
