José María Aznar,
Spanish politician, was handed a stunning defeat in March elections, just three days after the terrorist attack in Madrid that killed about 202 people and injured about 1,400. His Popular Party lost to the Spanish Socialist Workers Party, headed by José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, who took over as prime minister. Many Spaniards believe that al-Qaeda targeted Spain because Aznar supported the United States' war on Iraq.
