Sheik Ahmed Yassin, spiritual leader and founder of Hamas, was assassinated by Israeli forces in March. Israeli officials acknowledged they intended to kill Yassin, who they blame for organizing terrorist attacks and suicide bombings that have killed hundreds of Israeli citizens and soldiers. Israel troops also killed his successor, Abdel Aziz Rantisi.
