retired four-star general, competed as an underdog candidate in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination, campaigning on his military background and his pragmatic approach to politics. He dropped out of the race in February. Clark led U.S. and allied troops in NATO's war in Kosovo in 1999, and retired from the military in 2000 after 34 years of service.
