Gertrude Ederle

Age: 98

swimmer, who, on Aug. 6, 1926, became the first woman to swim the English Channel. She completed the feat in 14 hr and 31 min, breaking the previous men's record. She won three medals in the 1924 Olympic games.

Died: Wyckoff, N.J., Nov. 30, 2003
