politician, stepped down as president of Georgia in November. His resignation followed more than a week of angry demonstrations by Georgian citizens. The protests began after the preliminary results of the Nov. 2 parliamentary elections were released. The opposition party claimed that the elections were rigged in favor of President Shevardnadze and the political parties who support him. Once extremely popular in Georgia, Shevardnadze is now widely resented by Georgians, who are disillusioned by their country's corruption and poverty.
