George Plimpton Age: 76
urbane writer, editor, and actor who frequently drew upon his own experiences—often his less-than-stellar exploits on the athletic field—in his works. He cofounded The Paris Review—the widely respected, but not widely read, literary journal—in 1953. In 1963, he joined the Detroit Lions football team, an experience captured in the book Paper Lion. He appeared in several films, including Reds and Goodwill Hunting. Died: Manhattan, Sept. 25, 2003
