Richard Grasso, chairman and chief executive of the New York Stock Exchange, resigned in September, after enduring weeks of harsh criticism over his compensation package, which included a payout of $140 million in deferred salary and retirement benefits. He had worked for the exchange for 36 years, starting as a clerk in 1968.
