Johnny Cash

Age: 71

highly influential and singular country music singer and songwriter who was known as the “Man in Black.” In his gritty baritone, Cash typically sang about temptation, flawed yet conscientious characters, and the working poor. He was inducted into both the Country Music and Rock and Roll Halls of Fame and won 11 Grammy Awards. He recorded more than 1,500 songs, which include “I Walk the Line,” “Ring of Fire,” and “Folsom Prison Blues.”

Died: Hendersonville, Tenn., Sept. 12, 2003
