Sérgio Vieira de Mello

Age: 55

diplomat, was killed in August when a suicide bomber demolished UN headquarters in Baghdad. He was appointed UN special representative to Iraq in May. Vieira was responsible for coordinating aid from the UN and nongovernmental organizations, returning refugees to their homes, and overseeing human rights. Prior to assuming the post in Iraq, Vieira de Mello, a Brazilian, had been UN high commissioner for human rights.
