John Schlesinger Age: 77
British film director whose 1969 film Midnight Cowboy—his first Hollywood project—is the only X-rated film to have won a best-picture Academy Award. Schlesinger's films typically featured fully realized yet flawed characters. His other films include Darling, The Day of the Locust, and Marathon Man. Died: Palm Springs, Calif., July 25, 2003
