Lester Maddox

Age: 87

restaurant owner and former governor of Georgia who, in 1964, defiantly refused to serve three black college students at his Pickrick Restaurant, a violation of the Civil Rights Act. He sold his restaurant rather than comply with the law. He was elected governor in 1966, and maintained his segregationist agenda.

Died: Atlanta, June 25, 2003
