Leon Uris

Age: 78

novelist whose fictional account of the creation of modern Israel, 1958's Exodus, became one of the all-time top bestsellers. He often wrote about war, and his other novels include Battle Cry, Mila 18, and The Haj.

Died: Shelter Island, N.Y., June 21, 2003
