distinguished Oscar-winning actor who often played dignified yet vulnerable characters, such as Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird, a crusading journalist in Gentleman's Agreement, and the title character in MacArthur. His other roles include Spellbound and Twelve O'Clock High.
