Charles Taylor,

president of Liberia, was indicted on war crimes charges by a special war crimes court in Sierra Leone in March. The 17-count indictment was unsealed in June. The court accused him of “bearing the greatest responsibility” for the prolonged wars that have devastated West Africa. After promising to do so for several months, Taylor resigned in August and went into exile in Nigeria. In September the UN reported that Taylor left the country with about $3 million donated to the country for disarming rebels. Taylor and Slobodan Milosevic are the only two sitting presidents to have been indicted by the tribunal.
