Néstor Kirchner,

Argentine politician, became president in May, after former president Carlos Menem withdrew from the race. The country's sixth president in less than 18 months, Kirchner faces a devastated economy. In July, Kirchner revoked a decree that banned officials from extradition to countries that have charged them with human rights violations. Dozens of retired military officials face trials in Europe for offenses stemming from Argentina's dirty war that began in 1976.
