Christine Todd Whitman, public official, stepped down as the administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency in May. Although she said she missed her husband and home in New Jersey, she was continually at odds with the Bush administration, which favored loosening environmental regulations, and environmentalists, who frequently complained that she deferred to Bush's agenda.
