Mongo Santamaria

Age: 85

Cuban-born percussionist whose music fused American jazz and funk with Cuban sounds. He wrote the song “Afro Blue,” recorded by John Coltrane, and his version of Herbie Hancock's “Watermelon Man” became a top-10 hit.

Died: Miami, Fla., Feb. 1, 2003
