Robert Merton

Age: 92

sociologist who studied subjects ranging from the mass media to the behavior of scientists. He developed the concepts “self-fulfilling prophecy” and “deviant behavior.” He's also credited with creating the focus group. He was the first sociologist to win the National Medal of Science, in 1994.
