Roy Jenkins

Age: 82

progressive British politician whose long career in public service began in 1948, when he was elected to Parliament as a member of the Labour Party. He served as minister of aviation, home secretary, chancellor of the exchequer, and president of the European Commission. Jenkins cofounded the Social Democratic party in 1981.
