Abba Eban Age: 87
eloquent Israeli diplomat who held leadership positions during most of Israel's early struggles for independence and then as an independent state. He became Israel's representative to the UN in 1948 and served concurrently as ambassador to the United States from 1950 until he was elected to the Knesset in 1959. He was highly regarded, especially in the U.S., for his persuasive, articulate speeches. Died: near Tel Aviv, Israel, Nov. 17, 2002
