lead swimmer on the United States' 800-meter freestyle team that set a world record at the 1924 Paris Olympics; also won a gold at the 1928 Games for swimming a preliminary heat for the 800; served as an Olympic swimming judge; inducted into International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1990. The cause of his death was not given. Died: New Orleans, Sept. 22
