Orvan Hess

Age: 96

pioneering obstetrician and gynecologist who, in 1942, became the first physician to successfully use penicillin clincially when he treated a woman on the verge of death from scarlet fever. Then, in 1957, he developed the first fetal heart monitor with Dr. Edward Hon.

Died: New Haven, Conn., Sept. 6, 2002
