Amin Lawal,

Nigerian mother, was sentenced to death by stoning in March after an Islamic court convicted her of adultery. An Islamic appeals court upheld the decision in August. Lawal, 30, was arrested after giving birth more than nine months after divorcing her husband. The man she said was the father denied the charge and was acquitted of adultery. Lawal is the second Nigerian woman to be sentenced to death for adultery. The other woman, Safiya Hussaini, was acquitted on appeal.
