three-time All-American swimmer at Ohio State (1952-54); won three NCAA titles: two in the 50-meter freestyle and one in the 100-meter freestyle; established four world records and 13 American records; one of the fastest swimmers of his day, he revolutionized the sport by incorporating heavy weights into his training, a practice once thought detrimental to a swimmer's development; U.S. Olympic team member (1952); won three gold medals at the 1951 Pan American Games; inducted into International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1991. The cause of his death was not given. Died: Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, July 27
