New York Yankees pitcher, who capped his remarkable rookie season in 1947 by notching two World Series victories over the Brooklyn Dodgers; first rookie to win an All-Star Game; posted 14-5 record and 3.07 ERA, but lost rookie of the year honors to Jackie Robinson; earned his nickname as a freckle-faced kid; helped Robert Redford with his throwing techniques during filming of the baseball classic, "The Natural." He died of complications from heart-valve surgery. Died: New Haven, Conn., July 19
