poet, novelist, and playwright who, with John Ashbery and Frank O'Hara, created the New York school of poets in the 1950s. He wrote more than 20 volumes of poetry, and his work—witty, lyrical, and often erotic—covered topics as diverse as furniture, lipstick, and fudge. Died: Manhattan, July 6, 2002
