Franziska Rochat-Moser

Age: 35

Swiss distance runner, who became household name in her home country after winning the 1997 New York City marathon; appeared in two Olympics (1992, 1996); retired in July 2001 following a hip operation. She died of injuries sustained in an avalanche.

Died: Lausanne, Switzerland, March 7
