Rod Steiger

versatile, compelling character actor who won a Best Actor Oscar for his role as a Southern sheriff in 1968's In the Heat of the Night. An actor who totally immersed himself in the roles he played, Steiger also earned Oscar nominations for On the Waterfront and The Pawnbroker.

Died: Los Angeles, July 9, 2002
