Martin Burnham,

missionary from Kansas, was killed in June during a fire fight in the Philippines between members of Muslim rebel group Abu Sayyaf and government troops. Filipino nurse Deborah Yap also died in the battle. Burnham's wife, Gracia, was wounded in the battle and later returned to the U.S. They had been held hostage since May 2001.
