Jimmy Carter,

former president, won the Nobel Peace Prize in October. He was cited for “his untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development.” Another recent accomplishment was Carter's visit to Cuba in May—he became the first former or sitting U.S. president to travel there since Fidel Castro assumed power in 1959. He urged Castro to expand civil liberties and allow reform through elections. He also called on the U.S. government to lift sanctions against Cuba.
