Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, Burmese opposition leader, was freed in May after 19 months of house arrest. In her first public speech, she promised to “make sure democracy comes to Burma.” The military leader of Myanmar (formerly called Burma) said Suu Kyi would be allowed to travel freely within the country and face no restrictions on her political activities. While under house arrest in 1991, Suu Kyi won the Nobel Peace Prize for her pro-democracy efforts. Information Please® Database, © 2007 Pearson Education, Inc. All rights reserved.
