Aleksandr Lebed

Age: 52

charismatic governor of Russia's Krasnoyarsk Province and general who in 1991 persuaded Boris Yeltsin to declare himself the military's supreme commander and rally the troops to thwart a coup attempt by communist hardliners who had taken President Gorbachev hostage. He died in a helicopter crash.

Died: Siberia, April 28, 2002
