Thor Heyerdahl Age: 87
Norwegian explorer and anthropologist who, in 1947, traveled 4,300 miles from Peru to the Tuamotu Archipelago near Tahiti in a primitive raft he called the Kon-Tiki to support his theory that the first Polynesian settlers were from South America. His memoir, Kon-Tiki, became an international bestseller, and the documentary on the epic voyage won an Oscar. Died: Italy, April 18, 2002
