Charles Schwarz, former New York police officer, in February had his convictions of obstructing of justice and civil rights violations in the Abner Louima torture case overturned. He was granted a new trial for the charge of violating Louima's civil rights—he allegedly held down Louima while another officer sodomized him with a broken broomstick. In July, a federal jury deadlocked on the civil rights charges but convicted Schwarz of perjury. Rather than face another trial on the civil rights charges, Schwarz in September agreed to a five-year sentence for the perjury charge and prosecutors dropped the other charges. In addition, Schwarz, his lawyers, and family are barred from ever speaking publicly about the case.
