Harvard Univ. professor and surgeon whose research into how the body's fluids and chemicals change during surgery contributed to the development and advancement of organ transplantation. As chief surgeon at Boston's Peter Brigham Hospital in 1954 he oversaw the first successful human organ transplant—a kidney between twins. Died: Westwood, Mass., Nov. 24, 2001
